ALBA is the Spanish 3-GeV synchrotron radiation facility operated by the Consortium CELLS, equally funded by the Spanish and the Catalan Government. ALBA is currently operating 8 beamlines, and is expanding its capabilities with the construction of four new beamlines.
At the ALBA full-field transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) beamline `Mistral’ there is an exciting opportunity for a young scientist/advanced postdoc with experience in imaging techniques and a strong interest in development of novel methods and control and analysis software.
In the frame of the iNEXT-Discovery European project, ALBA is building a Cryo-SIM (structured illumination microscope) in order to carry out correlative cryo-SIM/cryo-TXM 3D microscopy. The two year position is for the development of fiducialization protocols and software tools to process the cryo-SIM data and correlate the volumes from both techniques. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the rest of the multidisciplinary Mistral team as well as the ALBA controls division and Diamond Light Source (UK) beamline B24.
This innovative 3D correlative approach entirely done in cryogenic conditions on whole, hydrated cells, will enable localizing specific structures and molecules within the cellular landscape in order to tackle complex cellular biological problems such as viral infection or anti-cancer drug delivery.
