Improving students' learning through research

At Eedi we’re looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join our Data Science team.

Salary: £65K

About Eedi
Eedi was founded in 2015 with a mission to improve student learning by combining proven pedagogy and cutting-edge machine learning research. We now have the largest repository of diagnostic questions in the world, and we have impacted the learning of more than one million students.

We have recently won a five year grant, worth over $11M, creating a unique opportunity to apply machine learning research in education.

About the role
Our data science team has collaborated with Microsoft Research to develop machine learning models which power personalised learning and learning analytics within Eedi. We have hosted two NeurIPS competitions and won the best education dataset award in 2021. Our team has published papers and authored books on our research to benefit the wider learning engineering community.

We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join our data science team. In this role, you will be developing and deploying machine learning algorithms to double the rate of mathematics progress for low-income students. You will be a founding member of our new machine learning research team alongside a new Machine Learning Researcher looking to improve existing models or invent new ones.

You will be joining a small team solving big real-world problems, working in an agile environment and deploying new features every week. We are all self-motivated and ready to support one another to get the job done. If you want to make a difference to the lives of teachers, students and parents, then you are in the right place!

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy causal machine learning models training on >130M answers
  • Build on our previous work with Microsoft Research and NeurIPS competitions
  • Develop a scalable machine learning infrastructure
  • Collaborate with academics at UMass and Rice University
  • Optimise the data pipeline (acquisition, cleaning, transformation)
  • Communicate with the product and pedagogy teams to inform and iterate on your models

Qualifications

  • BSc, MSc, or PhD in a relevant field or equivalent on-the-job experience
  • Proficiency with SQL for extracting and transforming data
  • Experience in deploying production-grade machine learning models
  • Experience with tools for managing the ML lifecycle (e.g. Airflow, Kubeflow, MLflow)
  • Experience with cloud services and infrastructure as code
  • Experience with GitHub and testing components used to deploy CI/CD pipelines
  • Understanding of containerisation to execute tasks in reproducible environments
  • Understanding of ML models including NLP and deep learning
  • Proficiency with Python for data science workflows

Preferred, but not essential

  • Experience in building machine learning systems with PyTorch
  • Experience working in Edtech or a startup environment
  • Experience with Azure
  • Experience with C, C++ or C#
  • Experience working with data warehouses (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks)
  • Understanding of causal machine learning and related fields such as structure discovery, or probabilistic deep learning

Benefits at Eedi

  • Competitive salary + stock options + generous pension
  • 30 days holiday + Christmas break
  • Cycle-2-work scheme
  • Home office budget (chairs, screens etc)
  • Truly flexible working – we appreciate real work – life balance
  • Quarterly off-sites
