The College of Engineering’s Fellow to Faculty program will recruit top scholars and academicians providing innovative solutions, technologies, and problem solving for emerging co-designed physical and computational systems including:
- Heterogeneous integration or advanced packaging of semiconductor -chips for the next generation of multidimensional electronic and photonic integrated circuits for electrification of transportation, renewable energy systems, AI, or other applications.
- Cyber-physical systems, encompassing control theory, real-time and embedded systems, computing protocols, sensor networks, robotics, and machine learning applied to the integration of computational algorithms and physical processes; Foundational aspects and methods in Machine Learning;
- Applications of machine learning in cybersecurity,
- AI for materials discovery, design, and deployment,
- AI-enabled inverse design tools that accelerate the discovery of advanced materials for improved performance and energy-efficient manufacturing.
Fellows will hold a disciplinary appointment in one of more of the following College of Engineering departments: Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE: https://ece.osu.edu), Computer Science & Engineering (CSE: https://cse.osu.edu), Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE: https://ise.osu.edu), or Materials Science and Engineering (MSE: https://mse.osu.edu ) at The Ohio State University. Two positions are anticipated, with primary research mentors housed in one of the fore mentioned departments. Fellows will start as early as Fall 2025.
Position Overview
The College of Engineering’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program is a two-year initiative designed to support early-career scholars in transitioning to a tenure-track position in one the participating departments. This cohort-based program provides Fellows with a structured, evidence-based mentoring model, allowing them to focus full-time on the development and expansion of their independent research portfolios for two years. During this period, Fellows have limited teaching and service requirements, although they may teach one course per year. Additionally, Fellows receive research funding and participate in career development programs to facilitate their transitions to an assistant professor role and long-term success.
Fellows will actively engage in scholarly activities within their respective departments and will develop a team of primary (i.e., research), secondary (i.e., teaching and service), and cross-cultural mentors (i.e., in areas of Fellows’ choosing) to guide their progress. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, Fellows will immediately transition to a faculty position at the rank of assistant professor within their home unit, and the tenure clock will begin. Since the offer for the faculty position is secured at the start of the program, Fellows will not need to re-interview for the tenure-track role. At that time, the home department will further facilitate the mentoring, promotion, and tenure process, ensuring a smooth and supported pathway to career advancement.
The position is open to applicants who may require sponsorship for a visa or other work authorization.
Performance Objectives
During the two-year program, Fellows will be expected to:
- Establish an independent line of research, mentoring undergraduate student researchers, participating on collaborative research teams, and present to technical audiences.
- Form research, teaching, and personal networks to inform their holistic growth as a Fellow.
- Engage in relevant department, college, university, and disciplinary communities that promote Scholars’ professional and personal advancement.
- Engage in one-on-one and group sessions with mentors who will guide and critique Fellows’ progress.
- Reflect and respond to formative and summative feedback of scholarly progress to advance their career trajectory.
After two years and a Fellow’s transition to Assistant Professor:
- Engage in research, teaching, and service activities appropriate to the promotion and tenure of an assistant professor in their respective unit.
- Develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized and externally funded research program in their technical fields.
- Teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervise student research.
- Participate in service to the university (internal) and the non-university (external) research community.
Qualifications
Required for Fellows:
- Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, materials science or integrated systems engineering or a closely related field that prepares the Fellow to conduct high-quality independent research at Ohio State
- Evidence of research accomplishments (papers, presentations, products, outreach, etc.) that align with the aforementioned research foci
- Evidence of an interest in excellence in teaching material in areas related to the aforementioned research foci
Ability to learn from and engage with mentors, colleagues, and students with differing perspectives and backgrounds - Ability to work with others in a collaborative, positive, congenial, and professional team environment
- Ability to build scholarly communities inside and outside Ohio State
- Interest working in a College in which inclusive excellence is a top priority
- Willingness to receive and act on formative and summative feedback from a cadre of mentors
Desired:
- Dissemination of findings at national conferences and within peer-reviewed scholarly journals
- Openness to out of the box thinking and the application of nontraditional thinking to one’s discipline
- A commitment to interdisciplinary education and collaborative research
- A track-record of, and strong commitment to, cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment
Required for Assistant Professor (at the end of two years):
- Establishment of a sustainable research agenda aligned with one or most of the research areas presented above.
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to collaborate proactively and effectively in an academic setting.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on working constructively, decisively, and collegially with both external and internal colleagues and interdisciplinary teams
- Openness to sharing ideas, continuously learning, and displaying innovative thinking.
Desired for Assistant Professor (at the end of two years):
- Experience or training in mentoring and teaching

Electrical and Computer Engineering
Consistently ranked among the best in the nation, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) provides superior training for students and groundbreaking research at the frontier of high technology in all areas of electrical and computer engineering. ECE faculty, researchers and students engineer solutions to problems in diverse fields, from bio- to nanotechnology, from energy to mobility, from health sciences to communication, and beyond. The faculty body of the department consists of fifty tenure -track faculty, six research-track faculty and five clinical faculty, and sports thirty IEEE Fellows and one National Academy of Engineering member. Materials Science and Engineering
The mission of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is to create, transfer, and preserve knowledge through impactful research, dynamic teaching, and effective training in materials science and welding engineering. We believe that innovation is fostered through diverse interactions, and we are committed to an inclusive environment. As one of the largest materials programs in the country, MSE at The Ohio State University transforms materials synthesis, development, processing, characterization, and joining. We provide students with state-of-the-art experimental and computational techniques, preparing them to be leaders in the materials industry and academia. Our facilities include Mars G. Fontana Laboratories, which opened in 2020 after a $59.1 million renovation, with Phase Two scheduled to open in 2025. Our core research areas include materials characterization, computational materials science, corrosion science/sustainability, and materials joining. Extensive equipment resources support synthesis, characterization, and joining of materials for structural materials, ceramics and sensors, biomaterials and electronic/quantum materials.
The MSE undergraduate program is ranked 12th in the nation, and the graduate program 14th by U.S. News and World Report. Undergraduate students benefit from a 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio, dedicated advisors, and opportunities for research, internships, co-ops, global education, and professional societies. Computer Science and Engineering
One of the oldest computing programs in the country, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a national leader in impactful computing research and education. We create, teach, and actualize the principles that connect computing and society while advancing the forefront of foundational computer science into various interdisciplinary realms. Department faculty include 56 tenure-track and 8 clinical-track faculty, with 16 ACM/IEEE Fellows and 31 CAREER Awards among past and present faculty. The department continues to raise its national and international research profile through aggressive recruiting and large-scale projects (e.g., two NSF AI Institutes and an NSF HDR Institute). The department will continue to invest in creative and team science activities leading to ever increasing strengths in both foundational and applied computer science. The department is also developing innovative academic programs with various campus partners in topics such as AI, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital health, and multimedia. CSE faculty closely collaborate with various centers on campus including the Advanced Computing Center for Arts and Design (ACCAD), the Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI), the Sustainability Institute (SI), and the Ohio Supercomputer Center. CSE is vested in creating new and strengthening existing Diversity and Inclusion programs to provide an inclusive environment that will welcome all scholars.
Integrated Systems Engineering
The Department of Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE) offers degrees in industrial and systems engineering (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.). These degrees focus on the manufacturing, design, operations, and management of complex systems, providing students with a blend of technical, management and human-centered skills. The department has faculty doing cutting edge research in human systems integration, operations research, and manufacturing. The department has 50 faculty and staff, and graduates about 150 undergraduates and 30 graduate students per year.
