Website DonorsChoose DonorsChoose

Connecting the public to public schools.

DonorsChoose engages the public in public schools by giving people a simple, accountable, and personal way to address educational inequity. In this clip, board member Stephen Colbert tells our story.

To date, teachers at 83% of all the public schools in America have posted classroom project requests on our site. Projects range from paper and markers for a poetry writing unit to violins for a school recital. More than 4 million “citizen philanthropists” have supported such projects, channeling books, field trips, technology, and other resources to more than 40 million students nationwide. In all, we’ve generated $1 billion for learning experiences designed by our country’s most dedicated public school teachers.

GOOD Magazine highlighted us as one of 30 Places We Want to Work, while Fast Company named DonorsChoose one of the 50 Most Innovative Companies in the World—the first time a charity has made this list. Through its dedicated team and culture, DonorsChoose earned recognition as the #1 “Best Nonprofit to Work For” by the Nonprofit Times.

About the Role
DonorsChoose is looking for an Analytics Engineer to join our high-performing Data Science and Analytics team. Our ELT stack includes Fivetran, Redshift, dbt, and Looker. We track data projects in Jira, and have an engaged Data Working Group to help set priorities across the organization. As our Analytics Engineer, you will be responsible for building and maintaining flows integrating a variety of source systems, and continuing to push DonorsChoose as an innovator in crowdfunding and education equity.

Things you’ll do:

  • Provide fresh clean data sets to end users across the org, modeling data in a way that empowers end users to answer their own questions.
  • Transform, test, deploy, and document data from sources such as the DonorsChoose web system, Heap, Zendesk, Salesforce, and our email marketing systems.
  • Clearly document and communicate data issues.
  • Apply software engineering best practices like version control, naming conventions, and continuous integration to the analytics code base.
  • Optimize performance of the Redshift cluster, and help evaluate migration to Snowflake.

This position might be a fit for you if you have:

  • The habits and instincts around analytic SQL that come from 2+ years developing and maintaining data flows using modern data stack technologies including:
BI reporting tools (e.g. Looker, Tableau)
    data transformation systems (dbt preferred)
cloud data pipelines (e.g. Fivetran, Stitch)
orchestration (e.g. Jenkins, Airflow, dbt Cloud)
data warehouse environments (e.g. Redshift, Snowflake, etc)
  • Experience in a software engineering or data analysis role that led to a specific interest in data and analytics engineering.
  • Comfort aggregating and denormalizing data for analytics, and a commitment to details and consistency, balanced with bias towards action
  • Strong beliefs loosely held — willingness to advocate for your point of view, and to have your mind changed
  • Passion for rigorous use of data as a tool for racial justice and educational equity
  • Our Product, Data, & Engineering team fosters a casual work environment rooted in work-life balance where everyone’s input and ideas are valued. We believe that our employees are our most valuable resource and intentionally invest in their creativity and growth. If you care deeply about equity, collaboration, and using data for social good, this position is right for you.

The Team
This role is on the small but mighty Data Science & Analytics team in our Product, Engineering, and Data department. We’re currently a tight-knit team of three: a Director, a Data Scientist, and an Analyst. We’re excited about the opportunity to add an Analytics Engineer to the team to own SQL transformations for some key data sources and products, and create capacity for even more proactive analytics user support and effective machine learning models in the product. The Data Science & Analytics team is also lucky to work closely with a great team of engineers on the transactional system.

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation for this role is competitive with equivalent roles at other tech nonprofits of our size. In addition, we offer full-time staff 25 paid vacation days per year and 10 paid holidays, a rich employer-paid individual and family health plan, annual professional development stipend, and casual and flexible work environment.
