Would you like to be an integral part of monitoring tropical coral reef ecosystems and studying environmental change in action? Does working with data and how it is gathered, stored, archived, and shared appeal to you? If so, the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR) is recruiting for a Data Management Specialist within the NOAA/PIFSC Ecosystems Sciences Division based in Honolulu, HI.
This position will be with our Data Services Team and the primary duties will involve advanced programming, data systems, and analytical support for coral reef ecosystem monitoring and research. You will play a key role overseeing the entire gamut of data management and data services tasks, from working with enterprise database systems and creating tools that enter and provide access to data in those databases, to properly storing and archiving that data so it is accessible to all coral reef researchers. This position can also include participating in a research cruise in the tropical U.S. Pacific for several weeks to support our division’s data collection and community outreach efforts.
The position requires 1-3 years of work experience utilizing state-of-the-art programming languages, scripts, and editors in both the UNIX/Linux and personal computer environments including 1-3 years of professional work experience in the design, development, and support of relational database applications with client/server databases. The position is open for individuals who have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer, Biological, Physical, or Library Sciences and have a desire to work with the maintenance of our data and the creation of tools to better assist scientists to interact with that data. We highly encourage highly-skilled candidates with significant working knowledge of relational database management software, such as ORACLE or MySQL, to apply as well those with an interest/knowledge of coral and fish species from the U.S. Pacific.
