Would you like to be an integral part of monitoring tropical coral reef ecosystems and studying climate change in action? Does working with data and how it is gathered, stored, archived, and shared appeal to you? If so, the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) is recruiting for a data services positions within the NOAA/PIFSC Ecosystems Sciences Division based in Honolulu, HI.  This position will be with our Data Services Team and the primary duties will involve assisting the Data Services Administrator in providing guidance to the data management staff and overseeing the entire gamut of data management and data services tasks, from working with enterprise database systems and creating tools that enter and provide access to data in those databases, to properly storing and archiving that data so it is accessible to all coral reef researchers. 

 

This position can also include participating in a research cruise in the tropical pacific for approximately 1 month per year to support our division’s data collection and community outreach efforts.

 

The position requires five to seven (5-7) years of professional level work experience which includes programming, utilizing state of the art languages, scripts, and editors; design, development and support of relational database applications with client/server databases, including enterprise-wide database management systems, web applications and graphical user interfaces for relational databases; operational experience in the primary data management functional areas of data collection, data capture, data processing, data maintenance, data archival, and data dissemination; operational experience with metadata procedures, data integration, data manipulation, data parsing, and data auditing and managing large scientific data sets including geographic and time series data; and one to three (1-3) years of experience in managing IT-related projects, contracts, and budgets. The position is open for individuals who have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer, Biological, Physical, or Library Sciences and have a desire to work with the maintenance of our data and the creation of tools to better assist scientists to interact with that data.
