The Department of Quantitative Theory and Methods at Emory University invites applications for a full-time teaching track faculty position. QTM is a new and rapidly growing department at Emory, with faculty from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, including anthropology, biology, computer science, economics, English, history, operations research, philosophy, political science, public health, sociology, and statistics (see a list of current faculty at https://quantitative.emory.edu/people/qtm-faculty.html). We seek candidates with a doctoral degree in data science or a related field, to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the department and the broad meaning of data science, we encourage applications from any substantive area that contributes to the current data science ecosystem. Candidates should have a strong commitment to pedagogy, and to advising undergraduates from a diversity of backgrounds. Candidates with prior experience designing and teaching college-level classes in programming for data science, machine learning, or data visualization are especially encouraged to apply. Faculty appointments will be made at the teaching track rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor commensurate with current academic standing and achievement (see description of ranks and terms at https://college.emory.edu/faculty/documents/lecture-track/principles_procedures_teaching-track-appointment-reappointment-promotion_oct-2023.pdf). The teaching track at Emory College has one of the strongest and longest-running teaching tracks in the country with over 100 teaching track faculty.

Successful candidates will demonstrate experience and ability to teach both introductory and advanced undergraduate classes on statistics and data science (broadly defined) with a typical teaching load of 5 courses per academic year. In addition to teaching, successful applicants will demonstrate the ability to advise and mentor the department’s growing undergraduate population and contribute to the many experiential programs offered by the QTM department. Finally, successful candidates will contribute to the academic life and governance of the department, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University. 

Appointees will join a diverse interdisciplinary group of tenure track (19) and teaching track (7) faculty in the Department of Quantitative Theory and Methods, who work collaboratively on the teaching, research, and service missions of Emory University. The undergraduate majors offered by the QTM department are some of the fastest growing on Emory’s campus with nearly 300 new majors and minors each year. Items 3-5 should not exceed eight pages combined. 

Review of applications will begin on November 18, 2024, but all applications received before December 3, 2024 will receive full consideration.

Applicants selected for first consideration will be asked to have at least two confidential letters of recommendation submitted on their behalf – at least one of which directly addresses the candidate’s excellence in teaching and commitment to pedagogical innovation – and will be invited for an initial Zoom interview. Finalists will be invited to Emory’s campus for an in-person interview.
