Assistant Professor in Statistics with Emphasis on Big Data

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Statistics at the Assistant Professor rank to commence September 1, 2018 (flexible). We specifically seek candidates with an active interest in, and demonstrated potential for, leadership in Big Data and/or Data Science.

Candidates must have a PhD in Statistics or a closely related field such as Machine Learning, outstanding research record or potential, and evidence of excellence in teaching. The Department especially seeks candidates with research interests that will support involvement in SFU’s Big Data Initiative—described at — and more broadly can help to increase our internal engagement with Big Data and/or Data Science. We encourage applications from candidates that will engage in collaboration with other scientists who have data and/or work in related research areas. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal, computational, and communication skills.

The primary responsibilities of the position include developing and maintaining an active, externally funded research program; teaching a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Statistics; and participating in departmental, university, and professional service. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise students in our Master’s and PhD programs in Statistics.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science is comprised of 17 faculty members in Statistics, and five in Actuarial Science. The department is recognized internationally for its academic excellence.
